New 2016 Buick Encore Sport Touring or The Super Bug

Have you ever seen a Buick Encore on the road and realized it looks like a beetle of some sort? Well, I have. And now, the bug gets the sport treatment with the 2016 Buick Encore Sport Touring version.

This bug is getting a turbo! Buick has announced that for 2016, the Encore will take the road to performance and economy thanks to an all-new 1.4-litre, direct-injected, turbocharged engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the start and stop technology that we have come to know and love. Or not. Rated at 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, the engine with aluminum cylinder block and head is part of a new family of “small, power-dense engines”, marked by Buick’s promise to crank up the fun factor and keep the fuel economy numbers at a low. Isn’t that the promise every manufacturer makes in 2015 anyway?

The Sport Touring denomination wouldn’t be complete without a range of, you will have guessed, Sport and Touring features of course. Exterior features include 18-inch wheels, rear spoiler (because a crossover needs a spoiler) and matching body color door handles. On the inside, you get all the standard equipment your usual four-wheel bug receives, plus optional navigation, moonroof and safety equipment such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert. Plus, this is a bug that won’t disappear once winter comes, thanks to the available AWD system.

So all and all, there’s nothing really innovative under the Buick sun; just a few additional perks to give the 2016 Buick Encore a little something something to attract the masses and compete in the increasingly aggressive compact crossover segment.
